BF stickers dominate Cosmos in opener

WESTMINSTER — The defending champion Bellows Falls field hockey team began the 2017 season with an 8-0 rout of Springfield on Friday.

Abbe Cravinho had a hat trick and Dani Marchica tallied twice for the victors. Madison Streeter, Molly Kelly and Sophia Hyslop all finished with one burial, with assists going to Meagan Kelly, Paxton Santorelli, Cravinho and Streeter.

The 1-0 Terriers will face MAU on Tuesday.

Brattleboro Girls Soccer

BRATTLEBORO — The Colonels began the season with a couple of tough losses in the MAU Tournament.

Caroline Musinski tallied with 23:44 left in the first round contest to give MAU a 1-0 victory over the purple and white. Arden McKnight then scored a pair of goals for Wahconah in a 2-1 decision over Brattleboro in the consolation match.

Goalie Megyn Ayotte made five saves against her rivals and then stopped 10 Wahconah shots. Hailey Derosia scored the equalizer against Wahconah, before McKnight struck again.

The 0-2 Colonels will welcome Mount Mansfield on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Twin Valley Girls Soccer

WINDSOR — Tatyanna Bowman found the back of the net twice and Sadie Boyd also tallied to lead the Wildcats past Windsor, 3-2, on Friday.

"Great to get off to a good start. Lots of positives to take away from game, as well as plenty to work on. Good signs of an offensive attack and defense was extremely solid," said TV coach Chris Walling. "Tayler Courchesne and Kylie Boyd had solid games in the middle, as did Callie Dix at sweeper."

Jayden Crawford had an assist for the 1-0 Wildcats, who will play at Green Mountain on Tuesday.

Brattleboro Boys Soccer

SAINT JOHNSBURY — Sophomore Luke Williams was a bright spot for the Colonels during a 5-0 loss to Saint Johnsbury in their season opener.

"We have a very young team. A lot of them were playing their first varsity games," said BUHS coach Paul Sather. "We did fine. We played very well defensively."

The 0-1 Colonels will host Fair Haven on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Brattleboro XC

WESTMINSTER — The Brattleboro girls and boys cross-country teams placed first and second respectively during Friday's meet at Bellows Falls.

Sarah Gallagher placed second in 20:07 to lead the Colonel girls. She was followed by Liz Morse (21:43) in fifth, Annie Takacs (22:07) in sixth, Alexandra Miskovich (22:36) in seventh, and Molly Patenaude (22:52) in eighth.

Brattleboro finished with 24 points, Stratton Mountain was next with 48 points, and Hartford earned the bronze with 72 points.

Isaac Freitas-Eagan won the boys race in 16:28 for the Colonels, who scored 44 points and were only bettered by Stratton Mountain's 26. Colin Costa-Walsh ended up fifth in 17:35, Trevor Kipp took seventh in 17:46, David Pierce was 15th in 19:03, and Bram Tabachnik placed 17th in 19:24 to round out the BUHS scoring.

The Brattleboro teams will compete at MAU on Tuesday.

Saint Michael High School

BRATTLEBORO — For the first time in 50 years, an SMHS sports team competed at the varsity level and their harriers placed fourth in Friday's meet at Bellows Falls.

Stephen Borst (20:18), Jacob Christi (20:32), Ezra Christi (24:05), Nathaniel Pierce (25:30), Lucy Duchaney (30:40) and Michael Kelliher (31:51) were the top finishers for SMHS.

Also on the roster are Taran Grube, James White and Mary Duchaney.
