Brattleboro Mallers win tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Brattleboro Mallers 18-year-old boys basketball team, which is coached by Dave Arakelian, blew out Mass Fusion to win the recent Springfield Trailblazers Tournament.

Brattleboro got off to a quick start as they beat the Pittsfield Heat 61-38.

The second game was against Belgium's Basket Groot Zemst team. The Mallers would build a 10-point halftime lead and extend it to 15 before the Belgium national team would erase the lead and take a 50-49 lead themselves. Brattleboro would close out the game with a 13-6 sprint with 3-pointers by Tucker Llewelyn and Ian Fulton-Black for a 62-56 win. After the game, the team members posed for a picture with each other and made some new friends.

On Sunday, Brattleboro defeated the Mass Jaguars easily and found themselves in a very familiar position of being in the championship game.

Facing off against Mass Fusion, the Mallers never looked back after racing out to a 15-0 start and went on to an easy win and their first championship of the season. Llewelyn was the MVP of the tournament, while Fulton-Black and Taylor Patno also played well throughout the tourney.

The Belgium team had been touring the states and had visited Chicago, Florida, Washington DC, New York and Massachusetts including a visit to the Basketball Hall of Fame. After playing in the Springfield Trailblazers Tournament, they attended a Celtics game.
