BUHS Nordic teams place 2nd, 3rd

After a season opening sprint race at Mt. Top in Chittenden on Dec. 20, the Brattleboro Union High School Nordic team had its first distance race on Friday. Over a technically challenging five-kilometer skate course, with steep climbs and several hairpin turns, both the varsity boys and girls proved that the future is bright for this year's team.

Isaac Freitas-Eagan out distanced the field, winning with a comfortable 46-second margin over Woodstock's Justice Bassette. The other three scorers for Brattleboro were Spencer Loggia in seventh, Phelan Muller in 13th, and Evan Koch in 19th.

The girl's race was won by Mallia Hodges from Middlebury. Elery Loggia led the Colonels in fourth place, followed quickly by Isabella Thurber in fifth. Sarah Gallagher was 8th and Annie Takacs was 14th.

Looking ahead, the girls will be increasingly competitive as their times get closer together. They are all much stronger skiers this year than last and show a lot of promise.

The boys finished third with a team score of 40 points, behind Middlebury (22 points) and Woodstock with 39.

The girls finished second with a team score of 28 points, behind Middlebury ( 21 points) and ahead of MAU ( 36).

The MVL Nordic season continues with Tuesday's classic race at Wild Wings in Peru.
