Five-alarm fire levels barn in Townshend

TOWNSHEND — A five-alarm fire leveled a barn here on Sunday morning, and an occupant of the barn's second-floor apartment had yet to be accounted for, the town fire chief said.

Townshend Fire Chief Doug Winot said the call for response to the fire, at 185 Maggie Ladd Rd., came around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Winot, who lives roughly 200 yards away from the scene, said when he arrived in his truck, the horse barn was fully involved.

"When I got on scene, I went to a second or third-alarm and within two to three minutes, we struck a five-alarm," said Winot.

Approximately nine departments responded to the fire, with about 30 tanker trucks to help supply water to the scene.

Crews were able to save an adjacent barn on the property with minor exterior damage.

As of 2 a.m., an occupant of the apartment on the second floor of the barn was still unaccounted for, Winot said.
