Letter: Your Thanks
Groundworks Collaborative would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers that made this year's Camp for a Common Cause such a great success.
Roughly 35 people spent the night of May 18 camping on the Brattleboro Common to raise funds and awareness for our work with our neighbors experiencing homelessness. Together we raised just over $23,000 for Groundworks' shelter and housing support programs.
This event is a great way for our community to come together around the issue of homelessness and to call attention to it with a visual representation of what can be an invisible problem in Brattleboro.
On behalf of the entire Groundworks staff and Board of Directors, I would like to offer our sincere thanks to our generous sponsors of this year's Camp:
Dave Manning, Inc., Silver Forest of Vermont, New Chapter, Abatem Exterminating, Berkley & Veller Greenwood Country Realtors, Brattleboro Food Co-Op, Farnum Insulators, Recycle Away, Trust Company of Vermont, Cady & Dugan Law Offices; Hazel, Putney Food Co-Op, Brown & Roberts, Hotel Pharmacy, Friends of the Sun, Ltd., and Richmond Auto Repair.
Cota & Cota provided the grill and propane for our community barbecue, while faithful members of the Sunrise Rotary grilled up burgers and dogs - helping to feed well over 135 people. Food and other generous in-kind support for the barbecue was graciously provided by Sodexo at the Brattleboro Retreat, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Top of the Hill Grill, the Brattleboro Food Co-Op, Leader Distribution, and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Desserts were generously provided by members of the Interfaith Clergy Association and Anna Edson.
We were lucky to have The Van Burens and Sweet Pond contributing their musical talents, and Jason Scaggs mixing sound.
Commonwealth Dairy, The Works, and Dunkin Donuts each contributed to provide breakfast for Campers on Saturday morning after a very chilly night.
We would like to thank Green Mountain Tent Rentals for donating a tent, and Best Septic for providing port-a-potties at a generous discount. Saint Michael School allowed us to borrow their tables and chairs for the barbecue, and the Brattleboro Retreat provided overflow event parking.
This year, we put up a tent on the Common for every $500 we raised up to our goal of $20,000. Not by coincidence, each night that the Seasonal Overflow Shelter is closed, there are anywhere from 35 - 40 individuals camping in and around Brattleboro for lack of stable housing. We hope that this event served as a reminder that homelessness is a real issue for our community. We greatly appreciate the support of everyone involved, as we truly need the community's support as we work toward a permanent location for the Seasonal Overflow Shelter and continue to provide impactful services for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
If you would like to support Camp for a Common Cause with a contribution, visit GroundworksVT.org and click on the EVENTS tab, where we will continue accepting donations for the Camp through June 30th. Donations can also be mailed to: Groundworks Collaborative, PO Box 370, Brattleboro, VT 05302, Attn: Camp.
With many thanks,
Joshua Davis, executive director
