Live music: Jeff Lederer/Joe Fiedler
Jeff Lederer/Joe Fiedler Group performs at 118 Elliot St Gallery July 23
The joining of saxophonist Jeff Lederer and trombonist Joe Fiedler for a special three-day tour in preparation for their European residency this fall represents the coming together of more than 20 years of joint music making that crosses the lines of the worlds of Jazz, Afro-Cuban music and New Improvised music. Both Lederer and Fiedler are warriors of the New York City freelance music scene that travel easily from the abstractions of the Downtown improvised music world to the streets of the Bronx and New York's great legacy of Latin music. Lederer's work spans many musical worlds, and his Baroque/Salsa suite "Los Sazones" was premeired by the Chicago Symphony and has toured nationally for many years. Fiedler's work is equally eclectic, including his current role as musical director for the television show "Sesame Street."
They will be joined by special guest vocalist Mary LaRose, whose work has pushed the idea of the jazz vocal forward, extending the jazz tradition of "Vocalese," or the creation of lyrics to improvised jazz solos to embrace the music of Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy. The rhythm section of the group will include Nick Dunston on bass, the 20 yr old phenom who is quickly becoming a bright light of the jazz and improvised music scenes in NYC and George Schuller, the veteran drummer and band leader.
"Fiedler's among the most impressive trombonists to emerge in the past couple of decades." — Signal to Noise Magazine
