Walk for Amber StorySlam set for April 29
A story slam is an open mic event popularized by the Moth Radio Hour and other storytelling events.
With the Strolling of the Heifers event, six local celebrities and Dolan will judge the participants. Contestants will be asked to put their names in a hat and will be selected at random to tell a five-minute true story related to the theme of the evening — "Simple Gifts." Contestants will have the option of using one prop to illustrate their stories. The top three storytellers will win a prize donated by local businesses.
Proceeds from the story slam will benefit the Amber Bernier Scholarship Fund, which is distributed yearly to students graduating from Brattlebro Union High School and other high schools in the area.
Bernier was a 17-year-old BUHS senior who died just prior to her graduation in 2004. Teachers said she was a beloved student, and fellow classmates remember her for her kindness, beauty and style.
The Walk for Amber is a series of annual fundraisers, including the StorySlam, the Walk for Amber Walkathon, a raffle and a dinner that will be held on June 4.
This will be the 12th year of fundraising events.
